Member Spotlight - IOWA BUSINESS COUNCIL

Iowa Taxpayers Association wants you to get to know our members and to provide opportunities for networking. Each month ITA highlights a member company.

This month's member company spotlight is on Iowa Business Council. Following is their answers to our questions regarding information on their company and why they are an ITA member.

Tell us a little about Iowa Business Council.
The Iowa Business Council is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization whose 23 members are the chief decision makers of the state's largest employers. Since its establishment in 1985, the Council has worked to elevate Iowa's economy through global thought leadership, research, and advocacy. This unparalleled group of CEOs works together to identify opportunities to strengthen the state's workforce and overall economy, inform stakeholders by sharing data and insight, and network and engage to initiate change in the pursuit of prosperity for Iowa and Iowans. Ultimately, the Iowa Business Council's mission is to serve as a catalyst for economic vitality.

What is an interesting fact about your company?
Together, our members employ over 200,000 Iowans, with 1 in 6 jobs in Iowa tied to an Iowa Business Council member. Our members also spend over $1 billion on research and development and invest in Iowa’s economy with over $2 billion spent in capital investment.  Additionally, last year our members made more than $87 million in charitable contributions in Iowa.

Why are you a member of ITA?
Annually, the Iowa Business Council develops Iowa’s Competitive Dashboard, which is a report that measures how Iowa competes nationally in five key metrics. Every year the report identifies the need for Iowa to improve its tax climate, as our poor ranking in this area inhibits economic growth. The Iowa Business Council identified tax reform as a top policy priority, and so we value the partnership we have with the Iowa Taxpayers Association to work together to help improve the overall tax climate of our state.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to tax policy?
Tax reform is fundamental to strengthening the economy in Iowa and ensuring that Iowa companies can successfully grow and compete around the globe. A modernized tax system with competitive tax rates and rules would promote growth through greater investment, higher wages and more jobs in Iowa. In addition to this growth, competitive tax rates potentially put money back into the pockets of hard working Iowans while attracting others to consider moving to Iowa. The Iowa Business Council supports the creation of a simple, transparent, and stable tax structure to position Iowa for continued economic growth.
