Member Spotlight

Iowa Taxpayers Association wants you to get to know our members and to provide opportunities for networking.

This month's member company spotlight is on the Iowa Utility Association. The following are their answers to our questions regarding information on their company and why they are an ITA member.

Tell us a little about the Iowa Utility Association.

The Iowa Utility Association has served Iowans for nearly 50 years. As a nonprofit organization representing Iowa’s investor-owned utilities, we work with our members to develop, coordinate and promote a strong operating environment to deliver safe, affordable and sustainable energy across the state. We also organize various educational events throughout the year and the annual SMART Conference to help the public understand industry issues and economic development initiatives.

The Iowa Utility Association is composed of five investor-owned utilities that serve Iowans: Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy, ITC, Next Era Energy and MidAmerican Energy. Our members serve 72% of Iowa’s electric customers and 95% of natural gas customers.

Iowa’s investor-owned utilities play a key role in Iowa’s economy. One of the primary ways utilities drive economic development is by attracting new business and industry to the state and retaining existing businesses. For instance, large companies cite Iowa’s investment in wind as a key reason for doing business in the state. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple chose to build two new data centers in Iowa because of the state’s high production of wind energy.
