Gerald D. Bair to Receive the 2016 Iowa Taxpayers Association’s Weindruch Award

DES MOINES, IA — (November 28, 2016)
The Iowa Taxpayers Association, the state's leading nonpartisan business tax policy resource since 1935, in conjunction with the family of Linda S. Weindruch is pleased to announce that Gerald D. Bair has been chosen as the recipient of the 2016 Linda S. Weindruch Award. This prestigious award will be presented to Bair at the ITA Annual Meeting luncheon on December 2, 2016, at The Meadows Events & Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa.

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments and contributions in promoting and protecting the principles and policies of fair business taxation. The Iowa Taxpayers Association offers this award in memory and in recognition of Linda S. Weindruch, who passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis in October 2004. Linda was an active, longtime member of the Iowa Taxpayers Association. She was elected to serve on its board of directors in 1994 and served 10 active years. She was a tremendous friend of Iowa business and worked diligently to develop and shape legislative and regulatory policy that supported sound taxation principles.

Steve Evans, Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company, chair of ITA’s Linda S. Weindruch Award Committee, said, “Linda, the ITA and Gerry Bair have all contributed much to Iowa’s business tax legacy. Director Bair’s legacy includes decades of service as Iowa’s top tax official. His tenure and leadership serving our state as director of the Department of Revenue are perhaps unmatched — whether here in Iowa or nationwide. Back when Mr. Bair was still serving our state, I attended several national and regional gatherings of state tax administrators where he was participating; I was impressed by the respect and accolades our longtime director received from his peers in other states.  Linda and Gerry often sat across the table with differing opinions on critical tax issues for a given taxpayer, but they were very much the same in at least one key quality: Both Linda and Gerry zealously fulfilled their duties as strong advocates for their respective clients. Such dialog has helped mold tax law and thinking today among Iowa’s tax practitioners and administrators.”

Bair is a retired director of the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance with over 30 years of executive-level responsibility for administration of tax laws and financial requirements for the state of Iowa. He is experienced in working with federal, state and local officials as well as individual and business tax representatives to propose, implement and monitor statutory requirements.

Bair has been recognized for his ability to focus on the customer, bringing diverse factions together to problem-solve while enhancing the customer’s ability to interact with the Department. He is nationally recognized in his leadership in the areas of technology and innovative management.
