Mary Rose Shelley to Receive the 2016 Iowa Taxpayers Association’s Weindruch Scholarship

DES MOINES, IA — (November 28, 2016)
The Iowa Taxpayers Association, the state's leading nonpartisan business tax policy resource since 1935, in conjunction with the family of Linda S. Weindruch is pleased to announce that Mary Rose Shelley, law student and Juris Doctor candidate at Drake University, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2016 Linda S. Weindruch Scholarship. This academic award will be presented to Shelley at the Iowa Taxpayers Association Annual Meeting luncheon on December 2, 2016, at The Meadows Events & Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa.

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments and educational pursuit of experiences promoting and protecting the principles of fair business and law policies. The Iowa Taxpayers Association offers this scholarship in memory and in recognition of Linda S. Weindruch, who passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis in October 2004.

Weindruch was an active, longtime member of the Iowa Taxpayers Association. She was elected to serve on its board of directors in 1994 and served 10 active years. She was a tremendous friend of Iowa business and worked diligently to develop and shape legislative and regulatory policy that supported sound taxation principles.

Shelley is a third-year law student at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She serves as the deputy online editor on the editorial board of the Drake Law Review and is president of Drake Law Women. She is also a member of Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. She is currently working as clerk for the law firm of Dutton, Braun, Staack & Hellman in Waterloo, Iowa, and as a head representative for Kaplan. During her second year of law school, she was the secretary for the Student Health Law Association and the Baskets to Benefit co-chair for Drake Law Women. As Baskets to Benefit co-chair, Shelley organized a silent auction that raised over $1,700 for Children and Families of Iowa.

Shelley received her bachelor’s in economics from the University of Northern Iowa, where she made the dean’s list several times. While at UNI, she was president of Orchesis Dance Company, a dance company of students interested in pursuing the choreography, performance and production of ballet, jazz, modern and tap styles of dance. She also studied abroad in Nicaragua with a group of economics students that helped build and paint a water shed at the local village school.

Shelley grew up in Jefferson, Iowa, where she worked many hours at her mother’s local café and was actively involved in academics, sports and dance. In her free time, she enjoys dancing, biking the trails of the Cedar Valley and watching local bands. Following graduation from Drake Law, Shelley will work as an associate at Dutton, Braun, Staack & Hellman.
