Iowa Taxpayers Association Names Former Iowa State Representative Tom Sands As Its Next President/CEO

DES MOINES, IA — (January 4, 2017) Tom Sands, former Iowa Representative and House Ways and Means chair, has been selected as the new ITA president/CEO with a start date of January 4, 2017.

Sands joins the association after spending the last 14 years in the Iowa House of Representatives as a strong voice for Iowa taxpayers. For the last six of those years he was chairman of the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

Sands received numerous awards for his work on tax policy during his tenure in the Iowa House. Prior to serving as a state legislator, Sands was a Concord Township trustee and a member of the Columbus Junction City Council. Sands owns a family farm in Louisa County, which he rents out to his oldest son. In addition to farming and his work as a legislator, he was a bank officer in Columbus Junction for 18 years.

Sands stated his first priority is to, "make sure that whenever there is a discussion on fiscal policy or tax policy, the Iowa Taxpayers Association is at the table with a strong voice. I want to utilize the experience I have from working on behalf of Iowa taxpayers to make sure the tax policy that the Iowa Taxpayers Association recommends is adopted.”

Sands is filling the position previously held by Jeff Smith, who left to join the lobbying firm of Fitzgerald, Smith and Associates. Smith joined the Iowa Taxpayers Association in March 2015 after serving in the Iowa Legislature. Smith said, “I am proud to have led an organization and worked with its members who are dedicated to advancing strong tax policy for Iowa.”

Rich Pullen, chair of the Iowa Taxpayers Association said, “We are excited about having Tom lead the organization. He is dedicated to advancing the mission of the association and upholding the sound budgeting principles that guide ITA’s statements of policies and initiatives.”
