Andrew Karas to Receive the 2018 Iowa Taxpayers Association’s Weindruch Scholarship

DES MOINES, IA — (November 20, 2018) The Iowa Taxpayers Association, the state's leading nonpartisan business tax policy resource since 1935, in conjunction with the family of Linda S. Weindruch is pleased to announce that Andrew Karas, law student at Drake University, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Linda S. Weindruch Scholarship. This academic award will be presented to Karas at the Iowa Taxpayers Association Annual Meeting & Tax Symposium on November 29, 2018, at The Meadows Events & Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa.

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments and educational pursuit of experiences promoting and protecting the principles of fair business and law policies. The Iowa Taxpayers Association offers this scholarship in memory and in recognition of Linda S. Weindruch, who passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis in October 2004.

Weindruch was a graduate of Drake University Law School and communicated her loyalty to the school throughout her career. She was an active, longtime member of the Iowa Taxpayers Association. She was elected to serve on its board of directors in 1994 and served 10 active years. She was a tremendous friend of Iowa business and worked diligently to develop and shape legislative and regulatory policy that supported sound taxation principles.

Andrew B. Karas is a third-year law student at the Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. He currently serves as the lead student attorney in Drake’s Elder Law Clinic. He was the 2016 recipient of the Drake Dean’s Scholarship and has maintained a position on the dean’s list throughout his education. He is currently employed as the CFO of Radiant Complexions Dermatology Clinics, Inc., the position he has held since 2010.

Andrew received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa, in 2003. While an undergrad, he was named in Who’s Who Among America’s College Students and inducted into Delta Epsilon Chi National Honor Society. He also held various student leadership roles. Andrew then went on to receive a Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in nonprofit management from Drake University in 2007. Along the way, he took additional graduate credits in accountancy.

Andrew lives with his wife, Melissa, and their two children in Clive, Iowa. He grew up in Fontanelle, Iowa, where he was home schooled. He is the proud son of Galen and Lisa Karas. He enjoys reading and history, and he dreams of learning the sport of curling after passing the bar exam in February.
