Benjamin Nielson to Receive the 2019 Iowa Taxpayers Association’s Weindruch Scholarship

DES MOINES, IA — (November 19, 2019) The Iowa Taxpayers Association, the state's leading nonpartisan business tax policy resource since 1935, in conjunction with the family of Linda S. Weindruch is pleased to announce that Benjamin Nielson, law student at Drake University, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2019 Linda S. Weindruch Scholarship. This academic award will be presented to Nielson at the Iowa Taxpayers Association Annual Tax Symposium on Thursday, November 21, 2019, at The Meadows Events & Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa.

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments and educational pursuit of experiences promoting and protecting the principles of fair business and law policies. The Iowa Taxpayers Association offers this scholarship in memory and in recognition of Linda S. Weindruch, who passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis in October 2004.

Weindruch was a graduate of Drake University Law School and communicated her loyalty to the school throughout her career. She was an active, longtime member of the Iowa Taxpayers Association. She was elected to serve on its board of directors in 1994 and served 10 active years. A tremendous friend of Iowa business, Weindruch worked diligently to develop and shape legislative and regulatory policy that supported sound taxation principles.

Benjamin Nielson was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management from the University of Iowa in May 2016. He is currently a third-year student at Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa, where he focuses on business and tax law.

This year he is participating in the 2019 ABA Law Student Tax Challenge, a moot court alternative in which two-person teams of students are tasked with solving cutting-edge and complex business problems that may arise in everyday tax practice. In addition, he currently works as a judicial intern with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Iowa. Prior to that, he served as a law clerk for Global Atlantic Financial Group in Des Moines, where he worked primarily on issues related to domestic and international estate tax.

As a second-year student Nielson had the opportunity to work as a student attorney in the transactional practice of the Drake Legal Clinic, where he provided legal assistance to business startups, entrepreneurs and community nonprofit organizations to help them establish successful enterprises.
