The late Burns Mossman was a tax attorney with the Nyemaster Goode Law Firm in Des Moines. Most of Burns' practice involved tax disputes with the IRS or Iowa Department of Revenue.
Burns was a trial lawyer for the IRS in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1970 to 1978.
In 1978 Burns was appointed the first IRS District Counsel for Iowa. In 1982 Burns joined the Nyemaster Law Firm.
Burns was a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a member of the Tax Sections of the American and Iowa Bar Associations, was Co-Chair of the Iowa Bar Association committee that drafted and convinced the Iowa legislature to enact the Iowa Taxpayer Bill of Rights in 1994, and was a speaker at many Continuing Legal Education programs for the Iowa Bar Association, University of Iowa College of Law and other sponsors.
Burns also was active in and a board member for many civic organizations, including the American Diabetes Association, West Parks Foundation; Des Moines Golf & Country Club (President-2003); the Iowa Donor Network (organ retrieval for transplantation) (Secretary); and Camp Hertko Hollow Children's Diabetes Camp. Burns was also a member of the Iowa Taxpayers Association Board of Directors.
