2010 Award Recipient - Gretchen Hayne Tegeler


Gretchen Hayne Tegeler, formerly with the American Cancer Society, former Chief of Staff  for Governor Terry Branstad, and past Director of the Iowa Department of Management, was chosen as the recipient of the 2010 Linda S. Weindruch Award.

Tegeler's contributions to the state of Iowa include eight years as Director of the Iowa Department of Management where she assembled the set of "Sound Budgeting Principles" used at that time and until today to analyze the state budgeting process. Tegeler also prepared the case for cutting personal income taxes in late 1990s, and recommended requirement for breakdown of property taxes in annual statements for taxpayers.

In 1998-99 Tegeler served as Chief of Staff for Governor Branstad's. She is noted as a key player on the Branstad team that left state in its strongest financial position in Iowa's history.

After return to private sector, Tegeler provided leadership for the American Cancer Society in its goals of cancer education, advocacy, fundraising and service. At American Cancer Society, Tegeler was part of team obtaining passage of Iowa's cigarette tax and smoke-free legislation.
